How to remove metadata from a PDF

Most PDFs quietly record details about themselves: the author's name, the organization, the software that made them and the dates they were created and changed. Removing that metadata before you share a document keeps those details private. It would make little sense to upload a file to a server in order to keep its details private, so this tool cleans your PDF on your own device.

  1. Choose PDF files, or drop one or more PDFs anywhere on this page.
  2. Select Remove metadata. Every cleaned file is checked, then saved to your device.

Why it is better on your device

  • Private by design. Your files never leave your device. There is no copy on a server to be kept, leaked or deleted later.
  • No waiting. Work starts the moment you choose a file, because there is nothing to upload or download first.
  • Checked before you get it. The cleaned document is opened again and every detail the tool clears is read back. If a single value remains, the check fails and nothing is offered for download. If the check does not pass, nothing is offered and your original stays exactly as it was.
  • Free, with no account. No sign-up, no watermark added to your work, and it keeps working offline after your first visit.

Good to know

  • This clears what the document records about itself: who made it, with what, and when. Words printed on the pages are part of the content and remain.
  • Details stored inside a picture within the PDF are not reached by this tool.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove metadata from a PDF?

Choose your PDF and select Remove metadata. The author, title, subject, keywords, software and dates are cleared, and the clean copy is saved to your device.

What metadata does a PDF contain?

Typically the author's name, a title and subject, keywords, the software used to create it, and the dates it was created and last changed. Use Inspect PDF to see what a particular file holds.

Does removing metadata change the pages?

No. Only the details the document records about itself are cleared. The pages look exactly as they did.

Is my document uploaded to remove its metadata?

No. The document is cleaned on your device, and nothing is sent anywhere.
